LASIK; LASER-IN-SITU KERATOMILEUSIS LASIK is being used by an increasing number of surgeons to correct all ranges of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. LASIK is an extremely effective outpatient procedure that is suitable not only for higher prescriptions, but also patients with moderate to low prescriptions. Many of the world's most experienced PRK surgeons have recognized LASIK'S advantages. LASIK dramatically reduces your recovery time (versus PRK) and only slightly increases the chance of procedural risks compared to PRK. The procedure itself takes only a few minutes to complete and involves minimal discomfort. LASIK requires more technical skill and training than other laser procedures. The surgeon uses a precise motorized instrument called a microkeratome (an automated microsurgical instrument similar in design to a carpenter's plane) to create a corneal flap. This produces a hinged flap of tissue on the center of the cornea. The flap is lifted back and the cool laser beam then gently reshapes the underlying corneal tissue. The flap is then replaced and adheres without the need of sutures by capillary action or hydrogen bonding forces. These very strong forces are called VanDerVal forces and hold the flap in place until epithelial healing occurs within six hours.
